Duct cross-sectional area directly determines air velocity, pressure drop, and noise level. A duct that is too small for its airflow has high velocity, high friction loss, and audible turbulence. A duct too large wastes material and takes up unnecessary space. The target is matching area to the design CFM so that velocity stays within standard limits: 700 FPM for branch ducts to bedrooms, 900 FPM for trunk ducts. Knowing the exact area lets you calculate velocity with V = CFM / A (ft²) and verify duct sizing before installation. Duct surface area per linear foot = perimeter (in ft). For round duct: perimeter = pi x diameter (ft) = pi x D/12. A 10-inch round duct has perimeter = 3.1416 x 10/12 = 2.618 ft per linear foot. For 100 feet of duct: surface area = 261.8 ft². This is the area you need to cover with insulation wrap.
